5 Out DDM

There have been many discussion about whether or not the Dribble Drive Motion could be applied to a 5 out set. Many people feel that the spacing that is integral for making the DDM work cannot work with a 5 out set. In it’s basic form the Dribble Drive Motion is a two guard (or two man) fronted offence. It also has two wingmen in the corners or on the wing and a post that is opposite the ball. This alignment enables the offense to have vast amounts of spacing that enables players to drive to the rack. This is why many people feel that the DDM can not be set up in a 5 out alignment.

As a coach who has been coaching for at least 10 years now and has played at an elite level, I kind of agree with them.

But there is always a “BUT”. In the tradition 5 out alignment, with a 1 guard front, two wings, and two corners, I agree that the DDM will not work because of spacing and like many have discussed it will end up being a weave. Even with the two guard front DDM there are two different versions that many coaches use. One that has the wings in the corners and one that has the wings on the wing.

With this in mind we can use both versions and setup a 5 out alignment. Overload one side of the court by having one wingman on the wing and one in the corner, as pictured.

With this alignment you are still able to get the spacing needed to run the DDM principles. I have setup a playbook to spark ideas. I want it to be known that I have not implemented any of this playbook and it is just theory at this point using DDM principles. I hope this helps.
